National projects

Besides large strategic project, CESNET participates on following national projects:

Adaptive Management of Data Collection and Analysis in High-Speed Networks (FOKUS)
PPeriod: 01/2017–12/2020
Programme: Ministry of the Interior, Czech Republic Security Research Programme, 2015-2020
The objective is to create a system that will allow achievement of a higher degree of threat detection and better quality of data collection in networks. It will be achieved by implementation of feedback from detection systems to probes. Based on analysis of measured data, detection systems will ask probes for more detailed analysis of selected parts of traffic. Based on requirements, probes will do additional processing, e.g., analysis of application protocols or interception of entire packets. The project will involve development of a probe for processing the 400 Gbps Ethernet protocol.
Czech national infrastructure for biological data (ELIXIR-CZ)
Period: 01/2016–012/2019
Programme: The Ministry of Education, Youth and SportsmsmtIt aims to create a device to process and filter traffic of high-speed network with following parameters:
The Czech national infrastructure for biological data ELIXIR-CZ is being built as a distributed research infrastructure (RI) for research institutes handling molecular biology and medicine data. Its primary objective is to provide and facilitate open access to a wide portfolio of such data for the scientific community in the Czech Republic. The RI is a follow-up on the Czech Republic connection to the pan-European RI ELIXIR, included in the ESFRI Roadmap. The organisational structure of the RI ELIXIR-CZ copies that of the European RI ELIXIR to some extent; the cooperation among the Czech partner research organisation is coordinated by the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the ASCR; CESNET is a partner in the consortium.
DCPro—Technology to protect high-speed networks
Period: 2015–2017

Programme: TACR EPSILON

It aims to create a device to process and filter traffic of high-speed network with following parameters:

  • packet filtration up to 400 Gbps,
  • HW and SSW support for analysis of small packets,
  • modular design allowing to add specific applications (plug-ins).

The device will be equipped by one or more hardware-accelerated network cards to achieve high processing performance. Accelerators will provide Ethernet interface with total throughput of 400 Gbps in both directions. The software layer will be prepared to collaborate with common network adaptors with lower performance but affordable price.

We solve this project in collaboration with INVEA-TECH company.

Network Diagnostics from Intercepted Communication (DISTANCE)
Period: 2017 – 2019
Programme: TACR EPSILON 2

The project objective is to create a software solution capable of intercepting focus traffic based on various criteria and their combinations. The project results will be integrated into existing tools for the applicant’s network monitoring and will enable product creation in the applicant’s offer.

Distance collaboration in education in performing arts with modern telecommunication technologies
Period: 01.04.2018 – 31. 03. 2021
Programme: TA ČR ÉTA

The project goal is research and development of new network transmission technologies with hardware accelleration to support distance education in performing arts. We will also propose and evaluate the use scenarios.

DOBI – Detection of Security Threats for Infrastructures
Period: 09/2015–08/2020
Programme: Ministry of the Inferior of the Czech RepublicMV_CMYK_EN-300x120

The project aims to develop and evaluate methods for preventive protection of fibre infrastructure threatened by building construction and wire robbery. The developed methods should detect in advance any construction works or movements in the neighbourhood of wire paths while retaining the main functionality of wires—transmission of data.

EPCOM II—Collection of elements for photonic communication
Period: 2015–2018

Programme: TACR EPSILON

Its goal is to bring results of previous scientific and applied research performed by participants to the market. It will implement a collection of optical and electronic elements enabling to operate a photonic service over wired or wireless communication links with high level of compensation of the transmission delay.

Laterna magika. Past and present, documentation, preservation and accessibility
Period: 1.4.2018 – 31.3.2021

Programme: Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic – Národní A Kulturní Identita (NAKI II)

The main objective of the project is to create procedures and devices for preservation, protection and accessibility of Laterna Magika theatre as a specific form of cultural heritage, as part of a long-term sustainable system, applicable to other similar cultural forms and in other memory and collection institutions. The prerequisite for achieving the project objectives is the retrieval and processing of a large set of Laterna Magika films, which were transferred to the National Film Archive in 2010. CESNET is another project participant.

Monitoring of sensitive items with Internet of Things
Period: 2016 – 2019

Programme: Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchodu

he project goal is to develop a unified system for monitoring of the state and transport of sensitive items using the Internet of Things.

Platform for Network Feature Acceleration (NFV200)
Period: 2017 – 2019

Programme: TACR EPSILON2
The project objective is to create a platform that will enable easy deployment of virtualised network features in the fastest network environments. The basis will be an acceleration card equipped with two 100 GE Ethernet network interfaces and a FPGA gate field.

SABU – Sharing and analysis of security events in the national cyberspace
Period: 2016 – 2020

Programe: Ministry of the Inferior of the Czech Republic (BV III/1-VS)

The main objective of the project is to create a pilot system for timely submission and analysis of events related to the national cyberspace. The system will enable information mining and sharing among the involved security teams, including the national and governmental teams of the Czech Republic, with the aim to be able to predict the progress of an attack and warn the involved infrastructures. CESNET is the project coordinator.

Security Cloud
Period: 2014–2017

Programme: TACR ALFA

Goal of this project is to develop innovative solution for up-to-date services and infrastructure enabling to detect operational and security risks (i.e. attacks, anomalies, failures or decreased service quality). The developed solution will meet customer requirements for processing and analysis of enormous amounts of specific network-related data.

The solution will enable to collect and store data of various precision and perform deep analysis in real time. It will also allow complex querying over extensive data with interactive responsibility. Deployment in the software-as-a-service and security-as-a-service models should be possible.

The developed solution should scale and adapt to specific needs. In consequence, it will be applicable by wide range of customers—from large Internet and services providers to small organisations.

Participating partners are Masaryk University in Brno and INVEA-TECH company.

Secure Gate for Internet of Things (SIoT)
Period: 01/2017 – 03/2020

Programme: Ministry of the Interior, Czech Republic Security Research Programme, 2015-2020

The project focuses on increasing security of the Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which often contain unsecured and easily attackable components. Therefore, the project will examine options for securing IoT networks at the level of a gate enabling connection of devices via a wide range of wireless protocols. The gate will include a system for detecting security incidents comprising monitoring of wireless networks, a collector for aggregated saving of latest data samples, and an easy-to-expand set of detection modules.

Use of digital models for national infrastructure of heritage institutions
Period: 01.04.2018 – 31. 03. 2021

Programme: TA ČR ÉTA

The project will propose scenarios for the use of digital models by heritage institutions. Interactive 3D models will be integrated with the MUSEION collection database system used by museums. We will enable distance access to digitized collection items and demonstrate the use of this technology for museum visitors.

There are many completed national projects in which we participated.
