E-infrastructure encompasses a complex set of informatics tools useful for solving problems in a wide range of fields. Its services are applicable not only for nature sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, or informatics, but also for humanity sciences and arts. With continuing digitization of materials and growing importance of communication technologies hardly any field may not benefit from the e-infrastructure services.
The key CESNET Association activity is the development of the e-infrastructure under the same name. CESNET e-infrastructure is a complex national IT infrastructure intended to cover the needs of Czech science, development and education. It is included in the Roadmap of Large Infrastructures for Research, Experimental Development, and Innovations of the Czech Republic adopted by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports.
The institutional users span from universities, institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, science and research institutions, to hospitals, libraries, high schools and many others.
CESNET e-infrastructure components
Our e-infrastructure is very large therefore it is useful to divide it into logical self-contained parts that can be described separately. The main components comprise:
- communication infrastructure (CESNET2 network),
- grid infrastructure for mass computations
- storage infrastructure,
- remote collaboration infrastructure
The development of CESNET e-infrastructure is dependent on two large projects that provide most important sources of financing:
- CESNET Large Infrastructure project,
- Extension of the National R&D Information Infrastructure in Regions (eIGeR, e-Infrastructure and Grids for e-Regions project)
