Prague, July 18th, 2022. CESNET has created an interactive digital model of 5th-century jewellery. It is a unique treasure of gold jewellery from the period of the migration of peoples from Central Bohemia. The jewels were found in the Rakovník region. The treasure consists of a ring and a clasp, which shows the oldest known use of Czech garnet in the history of jewellery making.

The jewels and the digital model are presented to the public at the exhibition The Mystery of the Golden Jewels, prepared by the T.G.M. Museum in Rakovník. The visualization of the jewels is accessible in a special kiosk, which is part of the exhibition. “It will allow visitors to view the jewels in detail from all angles and to experience how the individual parts were probably joined into a single whole. Operation is intuitive using a touch screen. Digitisation was challenging due to the high gloss of the gold jewellery and the partial transparency of the set stones,” says Sven Ubik, Head of Technology for Network Applications at CESNET.

The digitisation of cultural heritage objects has been carried out by CESNET in cooperation with memory institutions for a long time. 3D models are available to visitors of individual exhibitions and on the CESNET website (https://modely.cesnet.cz/cz/).

As with previous installations of digitised cultural heritage that CESNET has implemented in cooperation with collecting institutions, the kiosk at the T.G.M. Museum has a permanent internet connection for remote management and updating.

You can see how to work with the visualization in a short video:
