CESNET has expanded the security of its infrastructure

Prague, May 10th, 2021. Due to the increasing frequency and intensity of DDoS cyber-attacks, the CESNET association has strengthened the security of the external perimeter of its network. Security at the global connectivity level will provide users with more effective protection against cyber-attacks.

CESNET in cooperation with PROZETA, has enhanced its external connectivity with global attack mitigation functionality based on inputs form the association´s monitoring tools and Internet traffic data analytics. The new security feature will reduce illegitimate IP traffic before it “enters” the infrastructure, thereby avoiding potential congestion on foreign lines. This method of mitigating massive distributed attacks is based on global Internet routing-level mitigation

PROZETA´s solution provides detection and separation of malicious traffic and its removal. It protects customer networks and applications from many types of attacks at different application layers. It is designed for all currently carried out attacks, up to the capacities exceeding 1 Tbps.

At the national level, CESNET implements a similar type of protection, its own DDoS Protector system. The association also provides its users with other tools through which users can manage and restrict illegitimate traffic already in the CESNET backbone infrastructure, without limiting their connections.

“The cyber protection of our users is a priority for us. We are working systematically to strengthen the security of our infrastructure and actively help our users to defend their networks.”, adds Jan Gruntorád, CESNET Director.

The CESNET infrastructure is better prepared for potential attacks already at its gates. Cyber defence is a necessary condition for the safe functioning of the national e-infrastructure. In this context, CESNET has also joined the Hospital SOC initiative to increase cyber protection of hospitals and healthcare facilities the Czech Republic, which have recently been exposed to an increased number of cyber-attacks.

CESNET was founded in 1996 by universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences. It is engaged in research and development of information and communication technologies, building and developing a national CESNET e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and achievements, it represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, especially in building the pan-European network GÉANT or grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. The association is also working on the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data, both synchronously in the form of video conferencing and shared applications, and asynchronously in the form of streaming.
