Heart operation live tomorrow on the internet

Prague, 22 January 2015. Tomorrow (23 January), people will be able to watch a live stream of a heart operation on the Internet. The stream will be ensured by CESNET for the online television channel Kardio.tv. The Internet stream entitled View Inside Cardiac Vessels will be transmitted from the Workplace for Invasive and Interventional Cardiology of the Internal Cardiological Clinic of Brno Teaching Hospital. The live stream on www.kardio.tv will begin at noon.

Kardio.tv is the first Czech online television channel focused on diagnostics and treatment of the heart and blood vessels. Its aim is to familiarise the public with the current options of specialised cardiological care and to draw attention to the seriousness of cardiovascular system illnesses, which are the cause of more than half of the adult deaths within developed countries. The most common of these heart conditions are ischemia and acute myocardial heart attack.

Tomorrow’s video stream will be the second in kind. Kardio.tv presented its first online stream of a heart operation last October in cooperation with CESNET. The video stream received a very positive reaction from the public and the professional community at the time.

CESNET has long been involved in ensuring high quality online streams and supports them with its own development. It is among the leading organisations in this field. It regularly presents its work at major professional forums and cooperates with leading medical facilities throughout the world. The streams in Full HD and 4K resolution, as well as in 3D, will enable the scientific community to share findings across large distances, while maintaining the image quality of the content. Medical operations are a typical example of this.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. With its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network building project and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. Among other things, the association deals with the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications and asynchronous streaming.
