eIGeR project will bring our regions closer to global research

Czech Republic has gained a qualitatively new information e-infrastructure

Prague, November 6, 2013. The CESNET Association has successfully completed the implementation part of the Extension of the National R&D Information Infrastructure in Regions project    (eIGeR, with a project registration number CZ.1.05/3.2.00/08.0142). The implementation finished on October 31, 2013, and project is now transferred into a 5-year sustainability phase that will last till October 31, 2018. Thanks to the eIGeR project the Czech Republic has gained a qualitatively new information e-infrastructure that will strengthen and intensify an interconnection of larger number of academic and scientific and research workplaces across the whole country. The Czech Republic thus moves to the level necessary for participation in the European research and worldwide collaboration.

During the project life the CESNET Association also significantly improved the transmission capacity of the national research network infrastructure up to 100 Gbps, procured several computing clusters, built three high-capacity data storages with a total usable capacity of 19 PB, and distinctly innovated the videoconference infrastructure. The eIGeR project has therefore substantially improved the regional access to a national and European research infrastructure and related important projects. It should be reflected in an increased region participation in service provision to research institutions.

The main motivation for the project was a significant change of user requirements that is expected in relation to the current and expected major investments into the research infrastructure in the Czech Republic. Most of them have been implemented within the Operational Programme Research and Development for Innovation (OP VaVpI) and have links to the large European infrastructures within so called ESFRI Roadmap.

The volume of data exchanged among organizations at home and abroad has increased quickly. The character of network traffic has changed similarly to the requirements and expectations of users. At the same time, the volume of stored data has grown fast which is associated with the significantly increased demands for computing capacity needed for data processing.

Project with the 30 months of implementation is strongly focused on investments. The total project cost is CZK 751 million, of which the eligible cost funded is CZK 599 million, while almost CZK 549 million is dedicated to investments.

The eIGeR project is complementary to the ongoing five-year Large CESNET Infrastructure project with a goal to reconstruct a national research network CESNET2 into a so called large infrastructure – a broad spectrum of equipment, resources, as well as services aimed at research whose purpose is to provide conditions for an effective collaboration of large scientific teams, both persons and experimental instruments which may be distributed across various countries.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. With its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network development and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. Among other things, the association works on the deployment of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data, both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications and asynchronous streaming.
