CESNET association’s patent enables implementation of fast compression algorithms

Prague, 18 October 2017 The CESNET association, jointly with the CTU Faculty of Information Technology in Prague, has acquired a patent protecting its invention enabling implementation of fast compression algorithms. The patent is titled A system for implementation of a dispersion table.

The essence of the invention consists in a new solution for dispersion tables (so-called hash tables) implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). The solution makes it possible to implement dispersion tables that are fast to initialise to the initial value and simultaneously require low FPGA resources. This is especially advantageous for fast and efficient implementation of some compression algorithms, for example LZ77. The patent is registered by the Industrial Property Office under number 306 787.

The patent-protected solution is the result of collaboration between the CESNET Network Application Technology Department and the CTU Faculty of Information Technology Department of Digital Design. A major contribution to the solution design was made by Ing. Matěj Bartík. In the past, CESNET acquired several other patents in the area of hardware design of video transmission technologies.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and accomplishments, it represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, particularly in building the pan-European GÉANT network project or grid projects (EGI.eu), and actively participates in their implementation. The Association also works on the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications, and asynchronous streaming.
