UltraGrid Technology at Networkshop42 Conference

Brno April 15, 2014. On April 3rd, 2014, the Invasive and Interventional Cardiology Center of Internal Cardiology Clinic at University Hospital in Brno in cooperation with CESNET Association participated at a Networkshop42 conference organized in Leeds by JANET Consortium, which is responsible for research and education e-infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

The Brno University Hospital together with CESNET Association and Masaryk University (MU) are world pioneers in utilization of interactive HD and 4K video transmissions in computer networks for pre-graduate and post-graduate education in cardiology. Based on feedback from abroad, MUDr. Petr Kala, Ph.D. (Brno University Hospital/MU) and RNDr. Petr Holub, Ph.D. (CESNET/MU), leaders of cooperating medical and informatics teams, received an invitation to give lecture on use of high-quality video transmissions in interventional cardiology. This medicine area is unique due to the deployment of concurrent image techniques, mainly X-ray, optical coherent tomography and myocardium fractional flow reserve (FFR) that are indispensable for accurate and effective decisions about appropriate treatment as well as performance of endoscopic surgeries.

Dr. Kala and dr. Holub participated at the conference remotely using unique UltraGrid technology that is used for streaming of cardiology interventional surgeries over computer networks; video material is transmitted in HD (1920×1080), 4K (3840×2160), and in the future likely in 8K (7680×4320) qualities. UltraGrid technology has been developed within Sitola laboratory by CESNET since 2005, for purposes of national research and education e-infrastructure in the Czech Republic, and has been often used also for advanced applications at a number of worksites all over the world. Thanks to the UltraGrid technology both the streaming of invasive and interventional surgeries are performed as part of education of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, for conferences and workshops of the Czech Cardiology Society, as well as for international events in cardiology. The technology was also successfully tested for education of post-gradual healthcare specialists in hospitals supervised by Brno University Hospital.

Clinic of invasive and interventional cardiology (IKK) of Brno University Hospital belongs to largest catheterization centers in the Czech Republic. Alongside the main workload of diagnostic and treatment surgeries on the arteries, the center also performs other highly specialized cardio surgeries. The Center as part of its wide collaboration within Czech Republic and in abroad organizes numerous educational events, is an international Centre of Excellence for complex coronary interventions and imaging, and actively participates at all important international events dedicated to an interventional cardiology. Its research platform enables work on own grant projects as well as organizing of and collaboration in Czech and international multicentre projects.

UltraGrid is a technology developed by CESNET Association as one of the key parts of Large Infrastructure to enable low-latency video transmissions over the Internet, from the HD quality up to 2160p/4K. Video may by compressed by an M-JPEG codec which is accelerated by the graphical cards that allow for real-time low-latency compression and decompression up to 2160p/4K. The UltraGrid system deploys commodity graphical cards supporting NVidia CUDA technology and can be used on a commodity PC and Mac hardware. UltraGrid also supports low-latency compression H.264 on CPU resulting in complete bandwidth spectrum coverage for HD video, from 10 Mbps (H.264) up to 2.2 Gbps (uncompressed HD video with 4:4:4 sampling). Deployment of these technologies facilitates a fully interactive cooperation within the national network environment mainly due to the one-way latency up to 100 ms or up to 160 ms in case of low-latency H.264 compression. With a proper compression setup the image quality is visually indistinguishable from uncompressed video.

Laboratory of Advanced Networking Technologies (SITOLA) is a common workplace of Brno Masaryk University and CESNET Association founded in 2002 for research and development of advanced networking technologies and applications.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research involvement, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network development and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. The Association has been also involved in the application of high-speed networks for multimedia data sharing, both synchronously with videoconferencing and shared applications, and asynchronously with streaming.
