Safer Internet Day with the CESNET Association

Prague, 2 February 2018. The CESNET Association will contribute to the International Safer Internet Day with its traditional seminar about operations and network safety, services and Internet applications. This year, the seminar will be held on Tuesday, 6 February. CESNET has prepared a series of presentations on current topics in regards to cyber safety. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. in auditorium number 256 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Dejvice, Prague.

Experts from the association will address issues they have encountered over the past several months while administering the national CESNET e-infrastructure. The seminar draws from the experience acquired from operating the CESNET e‑infrastructure and from operating the specialised CESNET-CERTS safety team, and the FLAB and NOC Forensic laboratory (network operation centre) units.

The main point of the programme is the CESNET Forensic laboratory workshop presentation called The Thin Red Line, aka Hacking show 2. This is a live demonstration of a network attack on a virtual company, aiming at acquiring sensitive data by compromising privileged user accounts in the OS Windows and Linux environments. The demonstration is inspired by actual findings from penetration tests performed by the CESNET Forensic laboratory.

Another topic will be the legislation, specifically, the obligations placed on institutions in the area of IT and the on-line environment.

The seminar is intended for anyone who is responsible for the operations and development of a computer network, services and its safety, for example, administrators and members of the safety team, as well as generally everyone who is interested in the area of network administration and Internet safety.

The CESNET Association was established in 1996 by universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences. It deals with the research and development of information and communication technologies; it builds and develops the national CESNET e-infrastructure intended for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and the results achieved, it represents the Czech Republic at important international projects, especially in building the pan-European GÉANT network or grid projects (EGI.eu). It has actively participated in its realisation. The CESNET Association highly emphasises the safety of network operations, services and user protection.
