Research infrastructures help accelerate the mapping of collective immunity to coronavirus

Prague, May 7, 2020. Members of the research infrastructures e-INFRA CZ and ELIXIR CZ, the CESNET association and the CERIT-SC Centre of Masaryk University, responded to the current need for computer technology in the EATRIS-CZ infrastructure, which is located at the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine of Palacký University Olomouc (ÚMTM), and is one of the leading academic institutions involved in laboratory testing for COVID-19. ÚMTM and EATRIS.CZ have created several software applications to support laboratory diagnostics as well as clinical evaluation of community immunity against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causing covid-19 disease.

CESNET and CERIT-SC have secured the rapid delivery of high-performance computing technology from M Computers, provided the necessary know-how and are also working together to provide a computing and storage infrastructure for processing data from ongoing collective immunity measurements.

M Computers has procured and long-term lent state-of-the-art technical equipment for real-time data collection, storage and access from all testing hospitals and laboratories. It also ensured the connection with the collection points so that the whole process took place without unnecessary delays. Experts from CESNET and CERIT-SC helped with the configuration of the provided hardware and are involved in the ongoing optimization of the entire system.

“We were approached by the call of Associate Professor Marián Hajdúch, Director of the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine, for help with computer technology, with which he turned to scientific and research institutions through the media,” said prof. RNDr. Luděk Matyska, CSc., Director of the CERIT-SC Centre and the Institute of Computer Science of Masaryk University.

“Our goal was to help put into operation and further optimize the system of collection and processing of test results as soon as possible, which is being developed by experts from Palacký University in Olomouc,” explains the Director of the CESNET association, Ing. Jan Gruntorád, CSc.

“This support has accelerated the deployment of a system for data collection and processing of the results of the SARS-CoV-2 collective immunity study, and at the same time will accelerate preparations for the so-called Smart Quarantine in the Czech Republic,” adds Doc. MUDr. Marián Hajdúch, Ph.D.

The e-INFRA CZ research infrastructure strives to contribute to the best possible management of the pandemic through other activities. It offers the state administration as well as the academic and scientific community the necessary professional cooperation in the implementation of the adopted measures. The CESNET Association was founded by various Czech universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in the field of information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and accomplishments, it represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, particularly in building the pan-European GÉANT data network and grid projects (EGI.eu), and actively participates in their implementation. The Association also works on the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications as well as asynchronous streaming.

The CERIT-SC Center (CERIT Scientific Cloud) is a national centre operating a computing and storage infrastructure for the implementation of large-scale “in-silico” experiments, usually in close cooperation with other scientific disciplines. It focuses on the experimental and innovative use of its resources and builds on three interconnected pillars: providing computing and storage capacity to the scientific community, excellent research in selected areas of informatics and long-term cooperation with user groups from many disciplines.
More at: www.cerit-sc.czEATRIS-CZ is one of the largest distributed research infrastructures in the Czech Republic, the most important centres of biomedical research and development are involved in it. EATRIS-CZ provides excellent research infrastructure and expertise throughout the translation value chain. Through 5 interconnected platforms, EATRIS-CZ enables the development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics up to the levels of the so-called “first administration in humans” or “proof-of-concept” clinical verification. EATRIS-CZ makes available its capacities for conducting multidisciplinary research and development in the field of key technologies (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, high-throughput testing, complete drug development, molecular imaging and radiopharmaceuticals, early validation clinical studies and regulatory expertise).

ELIXIR CZ is a large research infrastructure in the field of life sciences focused on biological data, their processing, storage, sharing and analysis. It is based on an expert part provided by the unique know-how of top experts in the field of bioinformatics, genomics, biology, medicine, informatics and computer engineering and on a technical part consisting of a heterogeneous set of hardware and software resources and specific architectures according to the nature of processed data. This unique technical solution is fulfilled primarily by the direct connection of e-infrastructures responsible for advanced IT solutions, building data warehouses, access to data and computing capacity.
