CESNET to Contribute Five Lectures to LinuxDays 2016

Prague, 23 September 2016. This year, as every year, CESNET will contribute to the LinuxDays open conference. The fifth year of this country’s biggest Linux event will take on the premises of the Czech Technical University Faculty of Information Technology in Prague-Dejvice on Saturday 8 October and Sunday 9 October.

CESNET is a partner to the conference. The Association’s experts will deliver five speeches in the Sunday set of lectures.

LinuxDays 2016 will offer ninety lectures and workshops. A lot of interesting projects, such as Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, Slax, openSUSE and vpsFree, will present themselves at their own booths. Entrance to the event is free.

For a detailed agenda and more information about the congress, go to the conference website: www.linuxdays.cz/2016/.

CESNET at LinuxDays 2016 – annotations of lectures

Sunday 9 October

10.00 to 10.20
Tomáš Čejka: Network monitoring using OpenWR
The presentation will outline how to compile, set up and operate the flow data collection module that is part of the NEMEA project. The objective of the lecture is to show how to monitor traffic in the network using routers with the Linux OpenWrt distribution.

12.00 to 12.20
Jan Mach: Mentat – system for processing information from security tools
The array of security tools that monitor network traffic and detect attacks on infrastructure, services and users is continuously growing. The amount of data that security teams and administrators have to process, analyse and distribute grows along with that. In order to process such large quantities of data, CESNET is developing and running the Mentat system, which it is gradually completing to become a SIEM system.

13.30 to 13.50
Michal Halenka: Tinc VPN or Finding the right one easily
Centralised VPN are like playing Chinese whispers – you rely on the next person to deliver your message for you. However, preparing your network for “each to each” communication can be exhausting and boring at the same time. Tinc will create and maintain full-mesh VPN for you. Give your computer the chance to address the right one immediately.

14.30 to 14.20
Ondřej Caletka: eduroam stripped of mystery
Everybody wants Wi-Fi. Ideally good, free and omnipresent. But hardly anyone wants to let anonymous users in their network and be liable for their conduct. How can we disentangle this problem? In the academic community worldwide, eduroam is the solution. The lecture will introduce you to the functional details of the system with respect to possible application of similar solutions beyond academia.

16.00 to 16.20
Michal Halenka: Z shell, or Don’t tell the computer what it knows
Do you spend a considerable part of the day working on the line? Do you keep opening the same man pages again and again? Then you should meet Z shell. This one-year-younger brother of Bourne Again shell has brought automatic completion to another level. It is for a good reason that Z shell starts with the last letter of the alphabet. It is the last shell you are going to try out.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. With its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network building project and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation.
