CESNET got attention with medical 4K streaming in Denver

Denver, Prague April 10, 2014. Yesterday, guests of prestigious international conference Internet2 2014 Global Summit could follow the streaming of kidney tumor surgery that took place under the supervision of MUDr. Jan Schraml, head physician at Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem. Video in 4K format was provided by the Masaryk Hospital and streaming to Denver was operated by CESNET Association.

The streaming was part of the conference scientific section dedicated to modern telecommunications methods applied in medicine, 8K 4K NREN Surgeries Worldwide. Sven Ubik and Jiří Navrátil from CESNET Association informed participants about the achievements of CESNET in this area over past years.

The streaming was performed thanks to the 4K Gateway developed by CESNET Association (www.4kgateway.com). The communication was enabled over the e-infrastructure CESNET network, European academic Géant network and Internet2 network interconnecting the academic sites in the US. Aside the transmission from the Czech Republic preformed by CESNET Association the participants could also watch another streaming from Brasil.

Internet2 2014 Global Summit is one of the most important events in the area organized this year. The audience counted almost 900 guests from all over the world. Participants could attend presentations by leading authorities covering broad area of internet innovations, applications, security, and new partnerships.

CESNET Association has been long-term involved in the development of applications for HD multimedia content transmissions and it has become a worldwide leader in the on-line streaming of surgeries. CESNET has presented its results in the area at important scientific fora and has collaborated with leading medical centers all over the world. In the Czech Republic it cooperates with number of hospitals to which it enables presenting their achievements on the Internet.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research involvement, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network development and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. The Association has been also involved in the application of high-speed networks for multimedia data sharing, both synchronously with videoconferencing and shared applications, and asynchronously with streaming.
