CESNET at Science & Technology Week: on-line broadcasts and a lecture on modern optical networks

Prague, 31 October 2014. As every year, CESNET will participate in the Week of Science and Technology, which will take place from 1 to 15 November this year. CESNET will provide an on-line broadcast of selected lectures. They can be viewed on the event’s website (www.tydenvedy.cz). The same site will offer recordings of lectures made by CESNET.

The Association will also contribute to the set of lectures of the Week of Science and Technology. Michal Hažlinský, the Association’s expert, will give a lecture named Light on (Not Only) the Internet, Or Modern Optical Networks in the Large Hall of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Národní 3, Prague 1) on 7 November at 1.00 pm. The lecture will shed light on how modern optical networks work and show that such networks can do much more than what the standard internet can offer.

The Week of Science and Technology is the biggest science “festival” in the Czech Republic. This year, it is going to present science for the 14th time in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, České Budějovice, Olomouc, Pardubice, Hradec Králové, Zlín, Jihlava, Ústí nad Labem, Karlovy Vary, Liberec and many more locations. Its programme offers over five hundred events: lectures, exhibitions, excursions, science cafés, documentary screenings, visits to scientific facilities, labs and libraries, etc.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. With its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network building project and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. Among other things, the association deals with the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications and asynchronous streaming.
