Another US patent for CESNET

Prague, February 6, 2014: On January 14th 2014, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued patent US 8,630,035 Modular set of devices for optical amplification of signal by raman fiber amplifier.

The patent grants the CESNET Association exclusive rights for manufacturing, sales and import of these devices into US territory. The device is already protected in the Czech Republic by a patent no. 303036 issued on March 7th 2012 by the Industrial Property Office.

The CESNET Association looks for parties interested in the manufacturing and deployment of CzechLight family of open transmission equipment. The name CZECHLIGHT is also covered by the registered trademark.

This unique equipment enables transform directly the transmission optical fiber into a distributed optical amplifier with a flat gain characteristics across the operational bandwidth as well as achieve a flat noise figureacross the operational bandwidth too.

The main author of the device was a long-term collaborator of the CESNET Association, Ing. Miroslav Karásek, DrSc., who passed away last year as a consequence of a serious illness before reaching 67. Miroslav Karásek was an author of two monographs and over a hundred of original papers published in international science magazines and specialized conferences, with over 750 citations. Within the collaboration with the Association, CLA amplifiers were developed. For their deployment the Award of Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic was awarded to Miroslav Karásek, and Jan Radil a Josef Vojtěch from the CESNET Association. The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1996. It is engaged in research and development in information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET national e-infrastructure for research and education. The Association also develops open photonic system CzechLight as part of its activities. Thanks to its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network building project and grid projects (EGI.eu).
